Google launched a native Gemini app for macOS on April 15, catching up to ChatGPT and Claude which have had Mac apps for over a year. The app was built in under 100 days by a small team using native Swift, runs on macOS 15 and above, and is free to download for all Gemini users over 13. The signature feature is the Option+Space keyboard shortcut, which summons a compact "Ask Gemini" bar from anywhere on the desktop without switching windows. Users can share any active window with Gemini for contextual help—ask "What are the three biggest takeaways from this chart?" and receive an instant summary without leaving the current app. The app bundles image generation via Nano Banana, video creation via Veo, and full chat history sync across devices. The bigger picture: Gemini is set to power an upgraded Siri and Apple Intelligence starting with iOS 27 and macOS 27, previewed at WWDC 2026 in June. That Apple-Google partnership makes the Mac app a preview of what billions of Apple users will experience by year-end. Localization angle: Google is offering free Gemini upgrades for students over 18 in Indonesia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Brazil through July 2026—making premium AI assistance free to millions of students in markets where English is a second language.
